Centrifuges are used in various industries to separate heterogeneous systems. The principle is based on the effect of centrifugal force on an inhomogeneous system consisting of two or more phases - suspension (liquid-solid), emulsion (liquid-liquid), aerosols (gas-solid or gas-liquid).

A decanter (a centrifuge for two-phase separation) is used for thickening and dewatering sediments formed in various stages of wastewater treatment. Decanters with flocculants are recommended for mechanical dehydration.
